Here’s how to teach your dog to roll over in a few steps. Truth be told, teaching your dog to roll over is not as difficult as you might think. While there is some preparation involved, you can get it done in a few simple steps and quickly, once you know what to do.
Training an animal is not the same as training a person. While you can talk to a person to let them know what to do, you cannot do that with your dog. If you did, your dog will most likely just sit, wagging it’s tail while looking at you.
Keep in mind training your dog to do any activity requires patience on your part, as well as reinforcement. While you may get the patience part, reinforcement simply means using rewards to get the dog to do what you want it to do. So, with that being said, check out how easy it is to train your dog to roll over. You can also check out the video below to see the steps in action.
How to Teach Your Dog to Roll Over
First of all you need to make sure that you have treats available. You also want to make sure that the dog does has not recently eaten or has a full stomach. So you may not want to attempt this shortly after the dog has eaten.
Ensure that there are no distractions around, so that the dog has your full attention. Make sure the dog can smell the treats. With the doggy treat in your hand, ask the dog to roll over, while make a roll over motion with the hand containing the treat. It may take you a few tries before the dog actually understands what you are saying and actually rolls over, but that’s to be expected.
Your dog may roll over partially and that’s okay as well. That indicates that your dog is beginning to get the idea of what you want it to do. All you need to do is repeat the process until the dog actually does the entire movement of rolling over.
Another technique you can use is putting the treat closer to the dogs nose and rotate the treat in a manner that gets the dog to begin rolling over.
